Cone bearing trees

This important family of over 300 species occurs in the Northern hemisphere, forming forests in the cooler northern regions and restricted to the mountains in the south. The trees belonging to it - firs, cedars, larches, spruces, pines and hemlocks - all have needle-like leaves and woody cones made up of spirally arranged scales; nearly all conifers are evergreens.
