Broad, spreading deciduous tree with alternate, toothed and wavy margin, ovate, glossy dark green leaves turning bright yellow in autumn.

Produces in spring  flowers with males in spherical heads and pairs of females within a 4 lobed bract which develop into the familiar beech nuts
